What is public liability insurance?

Public liability insurance covers your business if a member of the public is injured, or their property is damaged, as a result of your work. It's the policy that pays out if a client trips over your equipment, a passer-by is hit by something on a job site, or a dog you're paid to walk causes an accident. It isn't a legal requirement for most sole traders, but many clients, landlords and councils won't work with you without it — which makes it effectively essential for anyone dealing with the public.
